Miss Varicella

Disclaimer: I hate writing about personal experiences in my blog. So, hopefully this is the last rant you hear from me!

What a strange visitor I have! This certain miss Varicella visits everyone when they’re children, so she’s decided to visit me exactly two days before my legal childhood ends! It’s the law though, my childhood only ends when I decide it ends. So in reality, not yet. However, I’m not very pleased about this visit of Miss Varicella Zoster, aka, Chicken pox!

In my dreamland, I would have had many ideas to celebrate my last day as a child under the eyes of the law. But here I am, quarantined, not even for the disease that made the word ”quarantine” popular, but for a disease 9 out of 10 people have had by the age of 15! It all started with a little red itchy something on my collar bone which I’d assumed was an insect bite. The next day, that one little itchy something had become many little itchy somethings!

By then, I knew clearly what the red somethings where. I can’t afford to fall sick now as I have a pilgrimage ahead of my ”coming of age” (by law) year. Today, the pink polka dots have only multiplied! *Fever in the background*

Miss V, in two days, has taught me that I’ve been taking too much for granted. (Strongly advice you not to read this while eating). I didn’t realise what a smooth skin I had until this outrageous infestation caused blisters everywhere. I’d always complained of pimples, acne scars, etc.. But now, with the end not in sight, I wonder if this will ever go or if there will be permanent scars. I really hope not. Oh, how I’ve taken my ability to eat for granted! With blisters on the lips and sores one side of the tongue, you have to eat without the food touching your lips and that part of the tongue, and even if you do, it will hurt anyway because it’s incredibly painful to swallow. There are probably blisters down there in the throat too! Somehow, always, as a rule of thumb, there has to be tasty food when you’re sick or can’t enjoy it!

For the first time in my life, I’m going to sleep alone. I’ve been on solo travels and even outside the country without my family (twas a school trip to Europe, maties) but never in my 17 years and 363 days have I slept alone! I hope some ghost does not take me away. Hey, besties from the West (Westies!), before you judge me for this, let me tell you, it’s easier when you’ve had practice since infancy! I’ve instructed (well, threatened) my grandmother to come for me if I suddenly call out to her in the middle of the night. After all, I did stick with them when they all had covid (But I did not catch it).

12/09/2021

I surprised myself by not waking up in the middle of the night. Every time I performed this dangerous experiment before (which was just twice), there was always a large gap between the bottom of the bed and the floor, leaving more scope for the under-the-bed-ghost to come and take me away. So I ended up discontinuing the experiment on both the occasions. This bed is more close to the ground and the ghost is probably squashed.

I’m going to rant about the pink polka dots. They’re everywhere! Scalp, belly button, MY POOR FACE! Arghh! They better go away! Such fancy destinations they choose!

I feel very oily. Can’t wait for a regular soap bath! (For the inexperienced amongst you, you can’t use soap until the scabs dry).

I usually try to remain professional in the blogosphere and never write posts like this. Hopefully this is the last. I’d like to end on a grumpy note: The world, what an itchy place to be! LIFE ITCHES!

On the brighter side, it’s better to have chicken pox at a matured age like mine because, YOU KNOW NOT TO ITCH.You also know that you need to stay hydrated. On the darker side, it tends to be more severe at an older age (13+, in this case). I’m having medications and also distracting myself with some literary goodies by the side. I can’t leave bed argh! The horror of not exercising! I feel… Grumpy.(In case that’s not clear). Never writing another rant post!

PS: Have you ever suffered from a disease other than common cold and fever? Let’s talk about it! This is my first time and truth to be told, I kind of wanted to ”experience” something. I never tend to fall sick as I’m already vaccinated against most diseases under the Sun. Our government does well there.

  1. I lost a month of 2nd grade, including a week in the hospital, from complications of mumps. And I was bedridden the entire summer I turned 15 from a relatively mild case of rheumatic fever. The good news is that except for a ruptured appendix, I have been very healthy for the last 59 years.

    • The 2nd grade one sounds terrible! Too much for a little kid ๐Ÿ˜ข The good news is actually GREAT news! ๐Ÿ˜€ Iโ€™m glad youโ€™re well and hope you stay robust for many many more decades (or even century, if youโ€™d like that ๐Ÿ˜‰). Fortunately, today we have vaccines for mumps, whooping cough, measles, etc.. We got free government vaccines at schools. Hopefully they find one soon for cancer.

  2. I’m trying to remember if I had chicken pox as a child. After my stem cell transplant in 2016 I had to get all my childhood vaccinations again, which included chicken pox along with 17 other vaccinations. I’ve had issues that are related to arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis that started with an extremely rare disease when I was 8 years old that almost left me crippled. I’ve managed pretty well through the years. I can’t complain. I’m still above ground. I slept alone from 5 years old up until I got married when I was 22.

    • Now, now, the last point embarrasses me ๐Ÿ™ˆ Iโ€™m going to comfort myself by saying this is more โ€œculturalโ€. ๐Ÿ˜œ in India, 3-4 family members share a room. We mostly have big houses relative to, perhaps Europe abd all the extra rooms are used for Pooja (home temple), study, storage, etc..
8 year old you didnโ€™t deserve that ๐Ÿฅบ A little child would want to be out and about playing and not be tied down by arthritis.
Iโ€™m glad youโ€™re well now and I wish you best of health and happiness ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿค

  7. Chickenpox is really irritating. I had it in my childhood. It feels so itchy. You can’t resist the temptation of scratching, but you have to resist yourself. The more you scratch the more it starts itching. Hope you will be fine soon. Take care.

  8. Aww, sorry, Sam. I’m sure you’ll be better in no time. The most serious condition I’ve had was a lymph node on my neck. It supposedly required surgery, and as I was about to be wheeled into the room, the whole thing just got called off and the node disappeared eventually, after I applied a ointment given to me by my grandmother, may her soul rest in peace.

So, you’ll soon be 18, that should be fun. I had academic difficulties at that time and it really sucked for me, but I’m better and wiser having been through such an experience. Welcome to adulthood, Sam! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

  9. I’ve never had chicken pox. I was the only one to not get infected by chicken pox when my whole 7 th grade class was. I wished I’d get chicken pox like everyone else. It was really really stupid of me but I was feeling kind of left out. I am glad my wish didn’t get granted. I hope you a healthy recovery. Also Happy Birthday in advance bestie. ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ˜

I was infected by smallpox in the eighth class. Thank go we were on the summer vacation.

  11. Wow, sorry to hear that, Sam. Be strong and it will go away in a little while. There must be an outbreak among your acquaintance. There’s an outbreak in New York City not long ago before the pandemic. I think I had child vaccine against chicken pox as a child, but it is said this will only make the adult chicken pox, if I ever get any, more painful to handle. So far I haven’t had any, but with all the uncertainties in this world, who knows what will happen. Anyway, take a good rest and just relax and read. Sometimes thinking become overthinking and it is not good for you. Just take a rest and take it easy. Drink some protein shake if chewing is too difficult. Wish you all the best and be healthy soon.

  13. I hope you feel better soon! I had the German measles once as a child. I’m not sure if you have it where you live but try eating some applesauce if you can. It’s almost like a liquid and tastes very good.

  14. Aww hon. I hope you are feeling better! I know how daunting sleeping alone for the first time can be. My sister and I used to share a room till she left for college. Despite being 15yrs old, I was too too scared to sleep by myself – so for the first few weeks – I’d put a mattress on the floor on my parent’s room and sleep there. From to now – I hate sharing the room or bed with anyone else. Gotten so used to sleeping by myself now.
My entire family and I had COVID during the second wave – it was a nightmare – I didn’t sleep for 14 nights – not exaggerating. But we got through it all at home. So don’t worry! A few more days and you’ll be through!

If it is your birthday – HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY! Wishing you so much of happiness, success and love. โค

  15. Aahhh I really wish that you get well soon. I hope you are doing better right now. Chicken pox can be irritating.
You know the rituals and procedures Tamils follow? They are too much ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
And one of my friend said, that your face glows after the term don’t worry about the scars. Most of them vanish without leaving a trace.

Many more happy returns of the day. There were moments your writings and knowledge let me in awe. Stay awesome and energetic as always. Have a great day! โค๏ธ

  16. Ohhh chicken pox! I remember getting it as a child and being consolingly told that everybody gets it at some point, but that didn’t ease my misery one bit! Hope you are better now, and yes the squashed ghost bit was ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

  17. Hope you are alright now and feeling better. But, I am mightily impressed by your writing and thought it was fiction. I am hooked. I remember having chicken pox as a teen and trust me hated it being caught in entangled web, thinking whether it would ever end, not able to sleep proper with skin pressed and hurt on the mattress.

  18. I hope you are better now, Sahana. You must have been vaccinated for chicken pox as a kid, so you should have had mild symptoms. It can be terrible, I know. Take care.๐Ÿค—

  19. Chicken pox is disaster. Between the age period of 8-12 , I was affected almost every year.
Most horror part was that, it left those spots on our skin. Hopefully, that never happened again.

    Hope you’re doing well now.
    Have a good day ahead.

  20. Sorry to hear that. Chicken pox is worse when we get it in adulthood. More skin lesions and itchy. I think I had one as a child but mild. But I did get amoeba and typhoid before. So bad too. Itโ€™s relentless diarrhea that needed I.V. Fluids. It was food and water related. Take care. Happy weekend.
